Busy Bee Arya
Just minutes ago, I finally uploaded a video on Arya’s channel. JR, my husband, had created the channel when Arya was two years old. We thought it was a perfect title for her because she is always moving. I am excited to upload her videos and make more videos about her. We are new parents and everyday is always exciting and wonderful.
Arya’s Experiment #1
Title: Red Cabbage Experiment
Materials and Apparatus:
red cabbage
common household items
muffin baking pan
dropper
popsicle sticks
mortar and pestle
water
container for cabbage extract
paper towel (for cleaning )
red cabbage pH chart
Procedure:
1. Prepare the red cabbage extract by slicing small pieces of the red cabbage.
2. Place a handful of the cut pieces in a mortar and pestle. Add a little bit of water. Using the pestle, press the red cabbage pieces in a circular motion. You should obtain a little bit of the extract.
3. Remove the crushed cabbage and pour the extract into a container.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you collect the amount that you need. You can squeeze the red cabbage pieces to get more extract before you discard them. Be careful because red cabbage will stain.
5. Place a small amount of each household item( preferably a liquid or semi-solid) that you want to determine the pH into each hole of the muffin pan. You can leave one hole in between the liquid samples to prevent contamination.
6. Using a dropper, add a drop or 2 to each sample. Use a popsicle stick to stir the mixture. Use different popsicle stick for each sample. Or you can wipe it, before using the same stick for the next sample. Observe the color change.
7. Use the red cabbage pH chart to determine the pH of each sample. Red, light pink, dark pink and purple means it is an acid. Blue, aqua, green and yellow means it is a base.
8. Discard the samples and clean-up your working area.
Notes:
a. This is a safe experiment for your kids.
b. You can modify the steps to suit the age group of the child.
c. Always encourage your children to clean-up and wash their hands after the experiment.
