How to make a board game for pre-schoolers with no cost?
When Arya saw an attractive board game, she wanted me to purchase it. But I thought that it would be better to make it together with her.
She would see how the board set will transform from scratch.
What is the board game all about?
The board has an orchard with 4 fruit trees and a raven drawn on it. The game is between the players and the raven in the middle of the fruit trees. The 4 players will take turns in rolling the dice to pick fruits from a tree. All the players should pick all the fruits to win the game.
How to Set it up?
The Board
Materials: copy paper, scissors, markers, color pastels, ruler, pencil
Procedure:
1. Cut each copy paper into a square by forming it into a right-angled triangle. You can do this by holding the the top right corner of the paper and folding it towards the lower left side. Then cut the extra piece.
2. Tape the 4 squares together.
3. Draw the fruit trees on each paper. It could be any fruit tree. Make sure you draw equal number of fruits on each. I drew 10 fruits.
4. Draw and outline the raven in the middle. Then with a another copy paper, trace the raven. This would be the raven that you will cut as puzzle pieces.
5. Make a border around the paper. You can skip this. But it looks better with the border.
6. Color everything. I used a combination of markers and oil pastels for the raven and the fruits. It made the fruits pop out. I used crayons for the rest because the oil pastels can be messy when you use the board for the game.
7. In the actual board game, the extra raven picture was cut into 9 equal pieces. I did the same thing.
The Baskets and the Fruits
1. Use 4 small empty matchsticks boxes. To make the handle, cut strips of papers and tape each end on each side of the boxes.
2. Form the fruits using the correct modelling clay colors: red for cherries, green for apples, purple for plum (red+blue), and yellow for pears.
The Dice
1. Make a dice using a copy paper. Please refer to the diagram below.
2. Draw 4 circles (red, green, purple and yellow), a basket and a raven on each side of the dice.
3. Cut the dice and tape the flaps.
Was it Worth It to Make the board?
We had fun in making the board. It was teamwork from start to finish. Arya helped make the fruits and color the trees and the dice. My husband cut the copy paper, made the dice, drew the trees and the raven. I helped in coWe played one round of the game. Arya didn’t want the raven to win, so she gets scared that the raven will show whenever we roll the dice. It was really a good DIY. Not to mention that we did it after our dinner.
