How to Prepare an Easy and Fun Lesson about Living and Non-Living Things?
I have mentioned to Arya on one occasion the difference between living and non-living things. This week, she asked for a full lesson on it. I gladly agreed. I have started to ask her the lesson that she would like to do for the day. But lately, I have been asking her what she wants. Usually, it depends on her mood and what she has been watching on her shows.
Station #1 : I wrote the words Living and Non-Living on two separate strips of paper. I made a nice border for each to make it attractive. In this station, I asked her to write the words on separate lined papers. She has been dodging the lowercase letters. She doesn’t like to write them. This was one of the ways to get her to practice.
Station#2: I wrote the headings Living and Non-Living on two separate strips of papers. This time, I have a tray filled with examples of living and non-living things. Arya helped me prepare all her learning stations in this particular lesson. But sometimes, she wants me to surprise her. 🙂 I let her sort/classify the items as living or non-living things. She wants the thrill of working fast in this activity, so she asked me to prepare her toothbrush timer. We will talk about her toothbrush timer in a different blog.
Station#3: I found a worksheet online that shows the following: What are Living things? What they Need? What can they Do? I think it is a good way of introducing the basic information about living and non-living things. Instead of printing the paper, I drew the pictures and wrote down the headings. It was fun and engaging since Arya was reading the words while I was writing them. I think that this how learning should be. It should have some sort of structure but it should be flexible to catch a child’s learning moment.
Station#4: I used an old set of animal cards and her animal figures to let her do a matching game. She has been doing matching games before. So, I took the opportunity to prepare a lot of cards. She helped me prepare and she asked me to time her again.
Station#5: I asked Arya to complete sentences about living and non-living things. We didn’t get to finish this station because she lost her interest after the second sentence. I also want her to take her nap. These days, she will do everything so she couldn’t take her naps. This is why we ended up doing her lesson. But she was so sleepy that I have to let her stop.
I hope you have fun reading my post today. I apologize for being absent for a while. See you in my next post.
