How to Prepare a Lesson on Writing Numbers 1-10 for Toddlers/Pre-schoolers?

Arya does not like to write numbers. So, I prepared colorful and more tactile learning stations in writing numbers.
How to Make the Learning Stations?
Part 1: Numbers 1-5
Station#1-Number 1 written on a felt paper

Number 1 with buttons on it.

Station#2-Number 2 written on a felt paper

The learning trays on top of a bookshelf.

Station#3-Number 3 written on a felt paper

Three ways to show the number 3.

Station#4-Number 4 written on a felt paper
Station#5-Number 5 written on a felt paper
Prepare buttons in a small container, foam numbers, sandbox and a written number on a wooden block.

I have to let Arya do the rest of the numbers on a different day, so she does not get bored at it. I also suggest to do the rest of the numbers on a different day to give the child time to process and practice the first set of numbers.

Part 2: Numbers 6-10
Flip the other side of the felt paper and write the rest of the numbers. This can save your resources. Prepare the buttons in a small container, foam numbers, sandbox and a written number on a wooden block. The preparation is going to be quicker than the previous day because you have already set-up. In all kinds of learning stations, you have to try it on your own. In this way, you know how many buttons would actually fit the number.

Different shades of green buttons can also help the child compare colors. Although I did it because I don’t have enough of one shade of green. 🙂

The sandbox is a great feature of the stations. The child can experiment with the sand while writing the numbers.

How to Teach the Lesson?
You have to let the child take the learning tray from the table and put everything back on the tray exactly how they looked after she/he is done.
1. Allow the child to trace the number. It is best that you sit on her left side and show her how to trace the number. She knows where to start and end.
2. Let her touch the foam number and show her the number on the wooden block.
3. Let her cover the numbers with the buttons.
4. Finally, let her write the number on the sand box.

Please watch your child during this activity since it involves buttons and sand. They can easily put these objects in their mouth. I hope you will give it a try and let me know how it goes. Thank you. I will see you in my next blog. 🙂
