How to Make a Blippi Inspired Tie-Dye Shirt?
Arya has been watching Blippi from when she was 3 years old. She likes the songs and the videos. After she watched the video when Blippi made a tie-dye shirt, she asked to wear her Blippi outfit and make her own version of the shirt.
Materials: white shirt, rubber bands, container with water, clear gloves ( our substitute was plastic wrap), fabric dye (our substitute was food coloring), clear bag to place the shirt, paper towel to wipe spills
Procedure:
1. Soak the shirt in water. Squeeze out the water from the shirt and take it out of the container.
2. Fold it lengthwise in small parts. Roll it into a small bun.
3. Wrap 3 or 4 rubber bands around it.
4. The fabric dye or even the food coloring can stain, so wear gloves when doing this step. Spray different colors all over the shirt. Arya used orange and blue because these are Blippi’s colors. She was so excited to see the results, so we did not get to soak the shirt completely with the food coloring.
5. Place the shirt in a clear bag. Let it soak overnight for good results especially if you are only using food coloring. We didn’t have fabric dye and the goal of the activity is more of a learning and discovery rather than actually wearing the shirt.
6. If you are using fabric dye, wash the shirt first before you use it.
Arya had fun doing this activity. She wore her Blippi outfit the whole day while waiting for her shirt to dry. I have to tell her that she has to wait for the next day for it to dry. She still wants to see how it looks before we put it in the clear bag. I am sure your child will enjoy the colors especially when they magically combined after the shirt is left to dry. 🙂
